In time for the last Twilight movie, the three hottest teens on the silver screen at the moment will be hitting the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market on the 30th July at King George Square in Brisbane. They have a thirst for blood, but are really quite ‘armless.

Bad jokes aside, come on down between 5pm and 9pm to see them and the rest of the Wicked Child softies such as Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott. Will they bite each other's heads off? Who knows!

Shelleyberelli's sewing up a storm for BrisStyle's upcoming markets!

Shelleyberelli’s been sewing up a storm in the lead up to the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market on Friday 30 July, 5-9pm at King George Square and the BrisStyle Co-op at the Red Hill Fair on Saturday 31 July, 10am-3pm.

Shelley’s been teaming with a theme. Check out her new drawstring bags – there’s the contrasting small and large flower prints in autumnal colours (...despite being well and truly past this mild season, into the 'deep' of winter) or the yummy chocolate/blue combo. "Perfect as book bags or music bags for little girls or to keep 'your smalls' in when you travel.... to prevent, as shared by my friend on her recent trip to London, finding her undies covered in glitter when she borrowed her littlest one's drawstring bag). Oooer, matron!"

Or maybe your laptop’s in need of a new case? Come and visit shelleyberelli for a padded laptop sleeve with a difference. Each is embellished with striking ribbon, all the way from Honkers.

Are you a crafter or knitter? Looking for somewhere special to keep your spare bobbins and thread or needles and yarn? Maybe a craftwrap’s for you?

All the old shelleyberelli favourites will also be available. Obi-style belts, purses and swing totes – made from found fabrics and special purchases from Japan (and Indooroopilly…). Hope to see you there!

Shelleyberelli will be at the following BrisStyle markets:

BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market
Friday 30 July, 5-9pm
King George Square, Brisbane City

BrisStyle Co-op Market Stall
Red Hill Fair
Saturday 31 July, 10am-3pm
Woolcock Park, Hawthorn Terrace, Red Hill

To check out other shelleyberelli wares, visit her on Etsy, made-it, facebook, or her blog.

The crafty world of Kellie Christie

This week the BrisStyle team caught up with the very clever Kellie Christie for a little peek into her crafty world.

How would you describe your work?

I use bright colours to create stand out jewellery items such as necklaces, brooches and rings. I work with everyday objects and love to give them a new life re-created as a lovely piece of jewellery.

How did your Etsy shop come into being?

I discovered etsy one day by chance and developed a slight obsession with it. I just couldn’t believe the amount of fantastic jewellery and other items that were available and all handmade too! I decided pretty quickly to create an etsy store for my jewellery so that people could purchase directly from me online. Before this, people could only purchase my jewellery through a very limited number of stores in Brisbane.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by colour and the objects themselves. Working with buttons is always fun, I often come across various cute and quirky patterns and prints. I also find buttons with brand names such as Calvin Klein, and random words. I am also inspired by other jewellery designers who work with found objects and recycled plastics, designers such as Liana Kabel and Margaux Lange.

Do you ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ as part of your creative process?

Yes, I have recently created an eco friendly fabric jewellery range. All pieces are made with salvaged and recycled fabrics and vintage or secondhand buttons.

Can you describe your studio / work area?

I share my space with my husband. I few years ago we converted our garage into a computer room (for him) and a studio space (for me). I love having a space that is completely mine and child free. Although it is almost always in an untidy state, I am thankful that I have a space to make, create and be inspired.

What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?

A “Design Your Own Flat Button Necklace”, I have created this listing so that customers can choose what colours they would like included in their necklace. I really enjoy creating custom orders, I find them both challenging and rewarding. I have recently had a custom order from someone wanting a necklace with snails on it!

Do you have any other places that people can view/purchase your work?

Thanks for your time Kellie!

KW Ceramics Sale at BiECO!

**STOP PRESS**

Fans of KW Ceramics will not want to miss this! Kim is having a sale at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 10 July where you could save 30% or more off her beautiful ceramic range!

"I am currently working on new products & colours in my vintage lace ceramics range, and to make room for these new pieces I have decided to have a sale at the markets! I’m offering 30% or more off a range of my bowls dishes and jewellery. Some of the items on sale use patterns or colours I won’t be creating anymore, so they’ll be the last ones available!"

"My ‘vintage lace’ ceramics range was originally inspired by a couple of beautifully crafted doilies that I discovered in a random box at St Vinnie’s. They had been given away due to some discoloration yet had such lovely patterns that I started to think of ways I could reuse these little works of art and incorporate them into modern, decorative and functional pieces, revamping them to highlight the beauty of their intricate patterns and texture."

"All my pieces are made by hand in my Brisbane studio, by pressing the doily or lace into the clay whilst wet, leaving the pattern behind. I have developed a series of bowls, dishes, jewellery and ornaments incorporating this technique."

The KW Ceramics Sale is on at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on this Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. BiECO is proudly supported by Peppermint magazine.

New Kellie Christie products for BiECO!

BrisStyle's button guru Kellie Christie has seized the BiECO opportunity to branch out and create some very exciting new designs for her ever-growing product range.

"For a while now I have been wanting to branch out and experiment with incorporating fabric into my button jewellery creations, and also to design a range of eco friendly fabric jewellery. I think that fabric and buttons go hand in hand and am always striving to create new and exciting designs. With the BiECO markets rapidly approaching I saw a fantastic opportunity to experiment and create some new designs. Here is a little sneak peek of items that I will be selling at these markets."

"These fabric flower pendants have been made using fabric scraps and recycled fabric from old clothing items such as a bridesmaid dress. I have also created great fabric flower brooches and some of these are designed to be both a brooch and a necklace!! These gorgeous brooches and pendants have buttons in the centre, most of which are recycled. I also have some very cute little fabric rosette brooches. Each one is unique and original and I am working on necklaces made with the fabric rosettes as well."

"Designed exclusively for the BiECO are my new "Scarf Necklaces". These are made from recycled fabrics, including re-purposed, secondhand shirts. These are very funky and also practical, they can be hand washed."

"I will have a table in the Brisstyle Co-op stall with some other very lovely and talented ladies including Melinda from Moose & Bird, Rebecca from Edward & Lilly, Katie from Kitty Boo Boo and Lucy from Alphabub. Come along and support handmade and the environment!"

Don't miss the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on this Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. BiECO is proudly supported by Peppermint magazine.

Shop Handmade: Reverse Garbage

This week the BrisStyle Shop Handmade series focuses on the Reverse Garbage Gift Shop.

The Reverse Garbage gift shop was started in 2001, and was a pioneer venue for Brisbane crafters to showcase and sell their handmade wares. For the past 9 years the Reverse Garbage gift shop has aimed to promote the creative re-use of high quality discards that would have otherwise gone to land fill. Materials such as fabrics, timbers, metal, paper and card and also salvaged embellishments like buttons and beads have been transformed into fantastic handmade items ranging from clothing and kids toys to jewellery, artworks, sculptures and gorgeous items for the home. It is Brisbane's best kept secret for the most beautiful eco handmade gifts and treasures!

Anyone can become an RG gift shop stockist, we are always on the lookout for fresh talent to stock the shelves and help us promote sustainability and creative reuse through arts and crafts. The criteria for items stocked in the gift shop is that they must be handmade by the artist and made up of at least 75% salvaged, reused, pre-loved or recycled materials.

We have had a few Bristylers stock the shelves over the years! Currently we are stocking lovely cards and prints on salvaged paper by Sally Flynn of Flight Industries and lavender birds by Rebecca Cason of Edward and Lilly. We love catching up with our artists and also meeting new ones! We have recently started hosting "Artists afternoon tea At RG" a relaxing informal gathering of makers and crafters with lovely teas, organic wines and cakes. Guests mingle and network with other crafters using salvaged materials in their arts and crafts practice.

Every three months we hold a themed exhibition of handmade wares in the gift shop space which is a lot of fun to plan and be involved in. Opening night draws a crowd of about 200, we have a bar, live entertainment and of course late night shopping in the RG warehouse! Our most recent exhibition was "Plastic Fantastic" an exhibition showcasing funky jewellery, bags and home wares made from plastic. The next one, scheduled for September 18th is "Junky Couture" which will be a spring fashion wearable art extravaganza with performance models, a henna body artist and of course live entertainment. We are currently taking submissions for "Junky Couture" So if you would like to be involved please get in touch via our website!

Reverse Garbage will also be at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on this Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm (click here for details), their stall will feature a range of salvaged materials for sale as well as examples from the gift shop showcasing the type of things that can be created by these materials. You can also purchase subscriptions to Reverse Garbage on the day.

If you would like to know more about becoming a stockist in the Reverse Garbage gift shop please email Brooke at info@reversegarbage.com.au or come say hello at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market Sat July 10th!

All the details about how to be part of "Junky Couture" can be found on our website or email Brooke at info@reversegarbage.com.au. You can also become a fan of Reverse Garbage on Facebook for updates on events, an invitation to the next "Artist's afternoon tea at RG", warehouse specials and new stock!
