The Australian Breastfeeding Association at BiMC!

The Australian Breastfeeding Association is Australia's leading authority on breastfeeding. Their mission is to educate and support mothers using up-to-date research findings and the practical experience of many women. They aim to influence our society to acknowledge breastfeeding as the norm for infant nutrition. The ABA will be at the next BrisStyle Indie Mother & Child Market on October 9th. They will have volunteers on hand to answer any questions you may have and they will also have a dedicated space for mothers to relax and feed their little ones.

The ABA's vision is for babies to breastfeed exclusively for six months, with ongoing breastfeeding for as long as mother and child desire. The ABA is a voluntary organisation made up of its members and subscribers. ABA needs subscribers to exist. You can subscribe over the phone, online or in person at group meetings. Subscription rates are $50 per year ($35 concession).

There are over 330 local ABA groups throughout Australia. Group discussion meetings, coffee mornings, new mothers' meetings, social events etc. are held in homes, halls and parks. Trained breastfeeding counselors lead these discussions and provide counseling. Visitors are welcome to attend a meeting before subscribing.

The Artist behind Hungry Designs!

This week the BrisStyle team caught up with Amanda Whitelaw, the talented artist behind Hungry Designs.

How would you describe your work?
I would describe my work as being an eclectic mix of comic book style illustrations, cheese cake pin up and macabre styling - such as Day of the Dead themed illustrations or zombies. I design and draw/colour all of the illustrations used in my wearable art collection. These designs are then laser cut out of wood and made into brooches, hair clasps, necklaces, earrings and rings.

How did your Etsy shop come into being?
I started my Etsy store when I started to revamp my website. I had ordered goodies off of Etsy before opening my own Etsy store. It seemed to be a natural progression, I needed an online store to link to my website and I was rather taken with Etsy's low fees and brilliant exposure.

Who or What inspires you?
I am hugely inspired by modern American comics. I have been an avid collector since I was 16 and I feel this is reflected in my illustrations. I am also inspired by horror novels and sci fi movies. Retro and vintage fashion seems to be a new theme that I am becoming linked to. I love 60's fashion and feel that this is the main inspiration for the "Retro & Country Living" collections. My partner, Colin, inspires me on a daily basis and I can always count on his constructive and honest opinion. He's my fresh set of eyes.

Can you describe your studio/work area?
My studio is a mass of papers, woodcuts, glue and components. It's a large space and I make use of the walls, often sticking up postcards and photos that inspire me. I love books and have dozens of photography and graphic design books which I use as inspiration. It's an artistic mess but I always know where something is kept and take great pride in having my own space.....although my work station does seem to take over the rest of the house if I have wholesale orders or markets - much to Colin's concern! *grin*

What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?
I will always have a soft spot for the 'A Little Rain Brooch' - in blue and red. She was drawn on a whim and has fast become one of the most popular pieces in the store. She has even been tattooed on a wonderful fan, Liberty, which came as a complete surprise!

The Crafty Adventures of Eliza from Elvenhair

This week the BrisStyle team caught up with Eliza from Elvenhair to talk about her chaotic and crafty adventures.

How would you describe your work?
My work is pretty chaotic. I always have several projects on the go at once. For example, at the moment I'm working on the Galozels, a species of crocheted toy that lives in the weeds of your garden, books about the Galozels, scented candles, baby clothing and sock monsters! That's between the times when I'm singing and playing the harp, naturally.

How did your Etsy shop come into being?
Years ago I use to sell my art on ebay. I had a very successful business going, but I felt a bit like a machine. I wanted something more personal, more human. I heard about Etsy and found it was a wonderfully warm place, with people who supported and did not compete, and who were willing to help out newbies. I was hooked! I soon stopped selling on ebay in favour of Etsy totally.

Who or What inspires you?
Everything inspires me - ideas seem to pop into my head all the time. For example, I was getting breakfast ready when I realised that the baby Galozels would fit into an egg carton, and when I was getting out cups and saw my never used but precious china in the back of the cupboard I thought about filling them with wonderfully scented candles. Inspiration is around us everyday if we are open to it.

Do you 'reduce, reuse, recycle' as part of your creative process? If yes, how is your art/craft eco-friendly?
The Galozels will soon be joined by the sock monsters. You know how you are always missing just one sock? Well, that's what happens to them - they crawl under the bed and turn into sock monsters! They will be in the book "The Pirate Adventure" - as the Pirates!

What is your favourite thing in the shop at the moment?
"The Great Adventure"! It's a book based on the Galozels that can be personalised to a child's name. In it, the Galozels go on an adventure that includes your child, all the while giving positive affirmations and learning about native Australian animals.

Do you have any other places that people can view/purchase your work?
I try to keep fairly up-to-date on my blog - Bambooslice.

Thank-you for your time Eliza!

BrisStyle Indie Designer Market Wrap-Up!

Last weekend we welcomed the onset of Spring and enjoyed the delights of the BrisStyle Indie Designer Market. Filled to the brim with handmade goodies, sweet tunes, tasty delights and good times, this market was out to impress.

The Market Crowds

Market goers were treated to an impressive array of handmade goodies, with shoppers stocking up on treats for themselves or getting in early with their christmas shopping.

Sweet tunes from Dennis and Aiden Geraghty of Music4You filled the air, with their take on Jimi Hendrix's 'Foxy Lady' - 'Crafty Lady' being the favourite of the day and receiving a round of applause.

Our tastebuds were not disappointed on the day with tasty delights from a Wood Fired Pizza Van, fresh coffee from Xpresso Coffee and sweet treats from our very own Bel of Enticing Icing.

On the day, we offered our support to the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation. Our raffle raised an amazing $294 so thank-you to all who visited and purchased a ticket. The Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation does amazing work promoting the awareness and prevention of cervical cancer. They are currently working in Bhutan with the Ministry of Health providing the cervical cancer vaccine to women who would otherwise not have access to it. Over 90% of girls in Bhutan aged between 12-18 have now had 2 out of the 3 needed rounds of vaccine. The third is due in November. In Australia, by comparison, only around 80% of girls are being vaccinated. The work of the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation will save many lives in Bhutan over the next 20 years as cervical cancer is the biggest cancer killer of women there.

On a final note we would like to say a big thank-you to the lovely peeps from Hopscotch Films who provided us with a stash of '2 for 1' movie passes to 'The Kids are All Right' to hand out to our supporters on the day.

The next BrisStyle event is the BrisStyle Mother & Child Market
Saturday October 9th, 9-2pm
St. Augustine's Church Grounds and Hall
Racecourse Road, Hamilton

Shop Handmade: Gone Dotti

We're so excited to share another Brisbane retail outlet with you as part of BrisStyle Shop Handmade series, Gone Dotti!

Gone Dotti is a gift shop with a difference, specialising in unusual and eclectic handmade items you won’t find everywhere! These handmade items are made with passion and quality by over 50 talented local artists and craftspeople. A feast for your eyes and a friendly smile will greet you when you come through the doors.

Gone Dotti provides a stage for local artists to display and market their incredible wares. A total community experience can be enjoyed, where artist and customer are brought together via their stories. Many of our customers feel confident to drop in on their way to an event, choose a fabulous handmade gift, partake in our free gift wrapping service and depart with a unique present in hand. We feel that our passion for handmade items fills the shop with positivity. The Gone Dotti experience is also a fabulously fun one for both the customer and the artist!

Who is Gone Dotti?
"Gone Dotti on Latrobe started in August 2008 with a dream to create a sense of community involvement and encourage talented people to sell their unique hand crafted inspirations. My name is Megan but some people call me Dotti..."

"If you look at the meaning of Dotti in the dictionary you will find it means:
• ·very enthusiastic or infatuated
• ·amusingly eccentric or unconventional....
I am very enthusiastic about handmade items and their individuality. I love to share the artist’s stories with the customer and this ensures that the gift is filled with a community spirit. For many years my creative outlook has been painting and recovering other people’s rejected items and redesigning them into treasures. I love to find discarded things and make them beautiful. I love to paint anything that doesn’t move! I am passionate about hunting down different, handmade items. This gave me the inspiration to open a shop that provided an outlet for others to do the same. It never ceases to amaze me how clever our artists are! I love to sell inspirational, eclectic handmade gifts, and provide a platform for small independent artists to sell and display goods that are handmade with love, laughter and passion."
